Enter Vogue’s “Art of the Surreal” contest for a trip to Spring 2012’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week

June 2, 2011

Vogue magazine is hosting a contest to send one lucky winner and a guest to see the Spring 2012 collections of students from my school, the Academy of Art University (AAU) during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in September. It will be held at the Lincoln Center (Formally held at Bryant Park). AAU is the only school that shows at Mercedes Benz in New York City or at any major fashion week for that matter. This will be our 13th biannual (I think) runway show during New York fashion week. It’s pretty exciting and draws some great names–as a VIP you’d be right in the action and get to be backstage! I usually sit and wait for the live stream to happen, but sign me up for the contest-I’d rather be there in person!

Anyway on to the contest that Vogue is having— this is awesome and super easy. I promise!

What you get:

Two airfare tickets, two nights in a hotel (according to the rules at $500/night) plus VIP status at the show including backstage access.

What you need to do:

Essentially get out your creativity genes because that’s what you need to enter the contest. Here’s the page, quoted below:

Get surreal—like famed artists Man Ray, Salvador Dali, and Elsa Schiaparelli—for a chance to win a prize package, including a trip to New York for the debut of Academy of Art University’s Spring 2012 Collections at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Lincoln Center, backstage access and an opportunity to meet the designers.

Create an original T-shirt graphic inspired by surrealistic art to enter for your chance to win.

Here’s a few examples that I like of Surreal Art:

First up is a piece from Femme Arbre which you can find on deviantART by clicking on that link.

Next is a piece called Flying Brain by Pixelnase

Another example taken from wikipedia is The Elephant Celebes (1921) by Max Ernst

And of course The Persistence of Memory (1931) by Salvador Dalí is a famous example of Surrealism art.

So search out some inspiration and start designing your own T-shirt graphic. Four runner ups will receive a custom screen print of their designs, so even if you don’t make it to New York you’ll still be able to have a creation of your own to show off.

About the Academy of Art University

The Academy is the largest private art school in the nation with over 17,000 students-that’s more than double the largest non-profit art school, Savannah College of Art and Design. It is one of the top fashion design schools in the country– you can read more in articles from the New York Times, WWD, fashion blogs and so on. Or in FashionSchoolDaily. With standout instructors-accomplished in the industry, not just people with degrees– the school of fashion really opens it up to anyone but only the strongest and best make it to the end. There’s no coddling. It’s a vigorous process to graduate and even more excruciating to be chosen to show in the “Spring Show let alone the New York Mercedes-Benz runway show- so it’s quite an honor to have your designs walk that runway and each show we never know what we’ll see.
