Marc Jacobs: A Hit and Miss Designer? Or a Visionary Genius?

Marc Jacobs. He just lost me again. Spring 2009 was the first time in years that I stop and thought “Wow. Want. Must Have.” about Marc Jacobs’ namesake line. Mary Poppins hats, pencil skirts and cinched waists galore—all in eccentric printed patterns. It was a fluke, I thought. But then things just got better with Fall 2009. The cardigans, gothy dresses, bright florescent colors and black, everywhere black. It was heaven on the runway. So it was with high hopes that I viewed his Spring 2010 line.

Wait, what? 1990 called, Madonna wants her bra back. The high collars I can dig. Outrageous, exaggerated collars were all the rave during the Fall 2009 fashion weeks. I have to say I love the way they look. But underwear as outerwear? Didn’t we already see this?

It led me to wonder how or why Marc Jacobs is considered a fashion icon, a directional and an innovative designer when his collections are completely hit or miss. Do you remember the baggy, dull clothes from Fall 2008? In his own words, “I really wasn’t very inspired this season. Momo Seattle was the “it” stop during Seattle’s International District Art Walk on Saturday. In addition to the unique merchandise continuously available, Becky Sullivan and Laura Castellanos were the featured designer and artist, respectively. The atmosphere was inviting, warm and fashionable.

Snugly centered on the northern corner of Jackson and 6th, Momo is a delightful surprise. Inside you will find beautifully crafted clothing, accessories and home décor from local as well as international artists and designers. For the Art Walk the owners Lei Ann Shiramizu and her husband Tom offered sangria and hors d’oeuvres while playing delightful and relaxing music. The store was a buzz with admiration for the art inside drawing a decent crowd through out the 5pm-8pm Art Walk. Read more…

Becky Sulivan Fall 2009

Becky Sulivan Fall 2009 Collection

What is it like winning two fashion design contests in one summer? “It was an amazing feeling,” according to Becky Sullivan. She won the Fall 2009 Seattle Fashion Week Comcast Student Design Contest and the 2009 “Best Everyday Collection” award in Seattle Magazine’s Seamless in Seattle Contest. For the first competition, designers created two outfits, one inspired by Comcast. “I went all out with my Comcast outfit and had computer mice on the skirt, buttons from the remote on the blouse and phone wire on the blouse,” said Sullivan.

Part of her awards included showing her fall collection at the Seattle Fashion Week Show and a limited collection in the Thaw Fashion Show. She is also a featured designer in the September 2009 edition of Seattle Magazine. Read more…
